A Bold Leap Forward

Boygenius’ first full-length album opens with the minimalist, 81-second track “Without You Without Them,” which features the harmonizing voices of Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker in a space of low fidelity. This track hints at the intimate, understated charm of their 2018 EP, but as soon as it ends, the album quickly reveals a significant evolution. The track “$20” introduces more complex time signatures and a fully electric sound, signaling a major step forward for the trio.

The Record showcases each member’s distinct contributions while highlighting their cohesive growth. “Emily I’m Sorry” mirrors Bridgers’ subtle electronic style, “We’re in Love” channels Dacus’ fatalistic edge, and Baker’s sharp delivery is evident in “Cool About It.” However, unlike their EP, this album presents a unified group effort. The songs are more robust, blending powerful instrumentation with personal, direct lyrics. From the punchy “Not Strong Enough” and “True Blue” to the melancholic “Revolution 0,” the album displays both emotional depth and a clear sense of direction. Boygenius masterfully balances playful and earnest tones, reflecting their evolution from a collection of solo artists into a cohesive band. This album not only builds on their previous work but also pushes their boundaries, suggesting that the trio is still growing and evolving.
