‘This Is More Than Enough’: Ben Rankin’s Fierce Dive into Isolation and Emotion
Music ReviewsBen Rankin’s new EP ‘This Is More Than Enough’ holds no punches. Written and produced in one week of solitude, this project is rough and very personal. As a child of two worlds – fans of Asking Alexandria and Avenged Sevenfold – Ben blends the best of both genres into a sound that is unmistakably his. Starting off strong with “1984”, Ben sets the stage with harsh, powerful riffs and his characteristic vocals. The track is a statement and creates a somber, intense atmosphere, fitting for its namesake. “All Is Well In Hell” follows, and is heavy, dark, and angry. It’s loud and harsh, but never loses control. Ben knows when to push and when to pull back, and it’s clear that is one of his greatest strengths.

“The Bed We Made” is slower, more melodic, but maintains the edge of the previous track. The lyrics dig deep and the meaning behind them is undeniable. It’s a track that can be described as ‘catchy’, and the slower pace gives listeners a chance to truly feel what Ben is expressing. Next is “Misery Loves Company”, which is the perfect halfway point in the EP. It’s called as it is: heavy, emotionally and musically. The vocals feel almost burdened, as if Ben is dragging his thoughts out of the pit and right onto paper. Chaos and control go hand-in-hand on this track and it’s like being in the room with Ben when he wrote it.
Finally, “Can You Stay Here?” is a slow, simple, almost stripped-down ballad. The lyrics are simple, sincere, and vulnerable, in stark contrast to the roaring and howling that comes before. that underneath the fury and the noise, there’s still hope. With ‘This Is More Than Enough’, Ben Rankin isn’t proving his ability – he’s giving us a piece of himself. And it’s more than enough.
